How To Pray

What is prayer?

Prayer is a line of communication with God that is more powerful than satellites, cell phones, or any technology known to man! It moves faster than sound. It is quicker than the speed of light.

Prayer is simply talking to God. It can be about something big or small, simple or complicated — it doesn’t matter! Each of us is designed to speak with our Creator. We have a built-in line that allows us to instantly connect with God at no cost.

Why should I pray?

Do you know your purpose? Do you know why you are here?

Prayer is a way to know who you are and what you are called to do.  Each of us is different and unique, and there is no one-size-fits-all advice (despite what your friends, family, or even enemies might tell you).

The only person who really knows what you need is you! Prayer is a way to find out about yourself, and in the process you learn about God automatically.

What do you need to know?

If you’re like most people, there are areas of your life where you feel confused. Maybe you’re in a relationship that feels stale. Maybe you missed a huge opportunity that you don’t think you’ll ever get again. Maybe the business you started is failing.

Prayer is a way to get valuable information on how to move forward in life. God will tell you how to heal, how to find love, how to make money, how to be a better husband or wife…

When you pray, God whispers secrets to you. Who else knows you the way your Creator knows you?! He knows exactly what you need, and He will talk to you in a way that no one else can.

How To Pray

There’s no exact formula to tell you how to pray, just as there’s no formula for how to have a conversation with a friend. But don’t worry! Prayer is very simple. All it takes is honesty and openness.

Honesty: God already knows your heart, so you might as well be honest! Say what you’re thinking and feeling. Tell God your fears, hopes, and dreams. Tell him why you’re angry, sad, or excited!

Openness: When God speaks, you have to be willing to listen. You have to slow down a little bit and open your heart to hear. Then you need to do what He says!

What If I Don’t Like What I Hear?

Sometimes God tells us to do something that is difficult but good for us. You may need to end a relationship or quit your job. On the other hand, you may be pushed towards the commitment of marriage or a job in a new location.

All of this might seem scary or too hard. Trust that God knows what you need, and that He has your absolute best interest in mind!

In 2 Corinthians 12, the apostle Paul prayed 3 times for God to remove a troubling circumstance (“thorn in the flesh”) from his life. The answer he received was unexpected. God told Paul, “my grace is enough for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” It was more beneficial in the long-term for Paul to remain in a season of weakness so he could learn to fully rely on God’s grace!

Get Started

If you need help getting started with prayer, begin like this:

“God, I’m 40 years old. Who am I today? What is my purpose?”

“God, I’m 15 years old. What is it you want me to do with my life?”

“God, I’m 80. I know I don’t have much time left. How can I leave a legacy?”

“Lord, I want to eat less sugar. Lord, I don’t know how to fix my relationship. Lord, I    want a new career. Lord, I’m tired of this addiction that controls my life. What should I do?”

“Father, what do I need to know right now?”

Then sit back and listen. The answer will come.

As you begin praying more regularly, you might feel unsure whether you’re doing it right. If that’s you, just remember these key takeaways:

  1. Prayer is a direct line of communication with God that allows you to gain insight into who you are and what your purpose on earth is. Prayer doesn’t just help you understand things about God, it also reveals deep truths about your own identity.
  2. As we grow in maturity, prayer is a necessary tool that helps us move past indecision and feeling stuck.
  3. Once you know what prayer is and why it’s important, knowing how to pray is simple. Just talk to God and tell him what’s on your heart: the key is honesty and openness.
  4. Sometimes God tells us to do something challenging in the short-term. Even if it seems scary, this will ALWAYS be for your ultimate good. If you’re open to hearing God speak to you and willing to do what He says, your life will move towards its destiny!
